Chapter 4: The Best Academic Resources for College Students

Your college years can definitely be an overwhelming experience. Here's the good news: No one expects you to take on college on your own. There are many academic resources that are available to you to make your college experience less overwhelming and stressful.

The only problem is finding those academic resources. In some cases, you may not find those resources until after you have completed your courses. To avoid the hassle of searching for effective resources and tools, I have provided the following list of the best resources for college students:
  1. Professors
  2. Tutoring Centers
  3. Your University's Library and Its Website
  4. Citation and References Websites
  5. File Sharing Tools

Professors

Professors are the top resource for any college student. If you ever need academic assistance, I highly recommend setting an appointment with your professor during his or her office hours. What better way to get academic help and support than from the person teaching the course?

Tutoring Centers

If you don't necessarily have the best professor in the world, tutoring centers are the next best resource. Through tutoring centers, you can gain a better understanding of the course material from a professional or a fellow college student who has previously taken the course. Being tutored by fellow college students may make it easier for you to understand the course material because you will be learning from someone who is on your academic level and was in your shoes taking the course.

Your University's Library and Its Website

Using my university's library and its website has made my research experience much easier. A library is a great place to receive one-on-one research assistance from a librarian. At the library, librarians can direct you in the right direction as to what sources you should use to produce the best research paper possible.

I have noticed that my university's library website is a hidden gem because there are quite a few students who are unaware of this resource. On the library website, there are many databases that provides free access to electronic textbooks, articles, and newspapers that are related to various research topics. While providing credible and peer-reviewed sources, the library website also offers guides for creating citations.

Citation and References Websites

In college, creating citations and references is an essential practice that you will be doing for many of your courses. Creating citations and references for research papers can become confusing and stressful. To help you avoid any confusion, some examples of good citation and reference websites include Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) and EasyBib.

Purdue OWL and EasyBib are excellent websites for learning how to create citations and references. Both websites provide you with the basic format of citations and references for a variety of writing styles such as, APA and MLA. They even have examples of how to create proper in-text citations and reference lists for each writing style.

If you are in a rush to complete a paper, EasyBib offers its citation generator service, which will create the citation for you. Please be careful when using citation generators. They depend on you inputting the correct information about your source.

File Sharing Tools

File sharing tools are a top resource for college students. Personally, I find that file sharing tools, like Google Drive and Office 365, are very useful for group projects. They make it easier for me to connect and work with my group members, even when we are not meeting face-to-face.

Google Drive is the most popular file sharing tool at my university. It offers a variety of tools including Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Sheets. The only downfall of Google Drive is that it may not properly convert documents or slides into Microsoft software.

For those who prefer the classic Microsoft tools, Office 365 may be the ideal file sharing tool for you. Through Office 365, students can work on Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Excel at the same time. Using Office 365 removes the trouble of trying to convert documents from other file sharing tools into Microsoft software.

I hope these resources help you achieve academic success in your courses. Don't be afraid to take advantage of these tools because they are there to help you. Enjoy the resources!
