Chapter 9: Powering Through Finals Week

The most dreaded part about college is finals week. Finals week is like a student's Super Bowl. It is the time period in which students apply their semester's worth of preparation and showcase everything that they have learned in final papers, projects, or exams.

Finals week can be an extremely busy time, making it easy for you to get lost and fall behind of your responsibilities. Based on my personal experience with finals week, I have developed the following tips to help you power through finals week:
  1. Get sufficient nourishment and sleep.
  2. Develop a schedule.
  3. Focus on one course at a time.
  4. Speak and think positively.

Get Sufficient Nourishment and Sleep

The key to your success in finals week is getting sufficient nourishment and sleep. During finals week, it is easy to forget to eat when you are trying to study for multiple final exams. You are probably pulling all-nighters during this week as well.

Without nourishment or sleep, you will not have the energy to give your best to each final exam. So, make sure that you get at least 7 or 8 hours of sleep each night and remember to eat. If you receive the proper nourishment and sleep, you will be more alert, and your mind will have more time to store the information that you have studied, increasing your chances of receiving an A+ on your finals!

Develop a Schedule

Developing a schedule can be an effective tool in helping you excel during finals week. I recommend that you allocate specific days that you will use to study for exams and for completing final papers or projects. When you have a schedule in place, you can establish order and balance in your academic life, making you more likely to effectively prepare and accomplish tasks for finals week.

Focus on One Course at a Time

Like many other students, I tend to focus on multiple courses at once during finals week. While taking a final exam, I sometimes worry about the next final exam that I must take. If you're like me, try not to get distracted and set your focus on one course at a time.

Focusing on other courses at once may make you feel overwhelmed and anxious. As a result, you may make mistakes on the exam that you are currently taking. So, try to keep calm and not put too much focus on future exams.

Speak and Think Positively

When you feel stressed or overwhelmed, repeat the following affirmations to encourage yourself and actually believe the affirmation when you say it:
  • I am smart.
  • I am strong.
  • I am energized.
  • I can do this!
  • I will succeed.
  • There is nothing too big or hard for me to handle.
  • I will get an A.
I hope these tips help you power through finals week. Remember, do not worry. Just do your best and everything will work out.
